I have seen some owners of Ford 6l using factory filter box to insert K&N inside, still having cold air sucked from the grille.
Unfortunately life is always abut choices. You want few more ponies and you don't care about long engine life- you put K&N or delete air filter all together.
Those who plan to use the engines for long time - use good filters.
Ford is not having the best reviews about their standard filters, but severe duty filters are really good.
I bought flatbed with one of them, added 100,000 miles and the minder was still in green.
Flatbed had it share of driving on dusty construction sites.
