K&N does make a drop in replacement (I'm a K&N dealer in my other life). That filter minder is just an indicator of a plugged filter. Nothing more. If you gage your filter changes by it, you are being very remiss in maintenance. Filters are only as good as the person who rakes care of the,, K&N's included.
A few diesel truck forum members have ditched the K&N intake filters due to reports/ pics of dirt accumulation inside the intake tubes and early signs of wear on the turbo fins. I don't use them and also recommend Donaldson filters.
I would never use flexible aluminum dryer duct if a piece gets sucked in you could be ruining a good engine. Used hard duct if you can adapt with an adjustable 90 for temporary fix.
