K&N does make a drop in replacement (I'm a K&N dealer in my other life). That filter minder is just an indicator of a plugged filter. Nothing more. If you gage your filter changes by it, you are being very remiss in maintenance. Filters are only as good as the person who rakes care of the,, K&N's included.
A few diesel truck forum members have ditched the K&N intake filters due to reports/ pics of dirt accumulation inside the intake tubes and early signs of wear on the turbo fins. I don't use them and also recommend Donaldson filters.
Thats not been my experience. I do ALL my own maintenance and that includes pulling the intake runner and physically looking for dirt inside (I keep wipe it down inside with a paper tpwel and I'v e never had 'dirt' on the towel.
I've read that as well but it hasn't proven out in my experience.
People put stuff like that on the 'Net' and it becomes gospel, when in fact it's BS.
I will say one thing about an oiled media filter. Over oiling one in an application where there is a MAF sensor in the airstream between the filter and the throttle body (in the case of a gasoline engine), can foul or destroy the MAF sensor from atomized oil clogging it. Have had that occur but as far as the filter passing dirt, ive not seen that and I check mine. While I may represent K&N as a distributor, I'm not partial or prejudiced in any way. If there was an issue, I state that.
If you believe everything you read on the Net as far as product performance, you are an extremely gullible person and most likely live in a dark, damp cave... IOW, distill comments for what they are worth nit what they state.
