It seems like the whether or not I take the ATV with me would affect the decision of what size my hitch needs to be. Wouldn't the weight that the ATV adds to the rear of the truck be the same thing as a heavier trailer tounge weight? On the Equal-i-zer web site, the three things that you input to determine the correct hitch to buy is: Gross Trailer Weight, Tongue Weight, and Weight of Cargo Loaded Behind Rear Axle.
I don't disagree that air bags might be the way to go but if I am within the cargo weight limits of my truck and within the weight limit of the hitch (say 1200 lbs assuming 1/2 of the ATV weight is behind the rear axle)shouldn't I just be able to buy the 1200lb hitch and adjust it so the truck is level with the load (whether I have the ATV on board or not)?
Am I thinking of this wrong?
