I have no dog in this fight but I don't think it's the owner's responsibility, diesel, gas, or other, to have frequent oil analysis performed. If Enthusiast X chooses to, that's great, but I don't see this as the OP's fault in any way, shape, or form.
Duramaxes are terrific engines; this just proves that anything that moves & man-made can and will break.
