Sorry for your troubles. Best thing is to do some calling around and see who can get you the best price on a GM crate motor. No matter where you buy it the warranty will be the same. The GM and Ford engines are what they call throw away engines. Go to the dealer and they will tell you the same thing.
I would not buy a junk yard engine you will probably end up with the same problem.
That's funny because I'm under the impression that the 6.7 Cummins has forced more owners to throw away their EGR coolers/valves, turbos and DPF's. Then install a tuner to compensate for the lack of these items, and then paying the piper with a new head gasket job! :S
Very few of your "impressions" are ever close to reality. You just always feel the need to bash.
Just addressing your boy (Cummins24V98 another hate monger) comment! He makes a comment about throw away engines and gets a free pass. :R

OP,
I would take this topic to the Dieselplace and get some real feedback. :W
Good luck...
Funny I don't say a word about cummins ang get slammed. I was giving the op my opinion on what he should do. Fact is if he takes it to a GM dealer they won't repair it they will want to long block it because they won't warranty such a repair.
Sorry to twist a few of you with facts.
I had a 6.5 installed in my 86 c20 it developed a cracked block. They replaced the whole engine, actually 3 seperate times. I asked why not just replace the block, full replacenent is all GM would allow. I said cool.
Cummins,
My mother worked for a GM/Chrysler dealership for over 35 years and she pretty much handled all the warranty work/approvals during that period. I can tell you there was a many Cummins crate engine that came into that shop. During the first year the Duramax debuted GM didn't want any engine repairs done and required all engines (which wasn't much) with internal problems to be sent back to corporate for failure analysis so a crate engine was sent in for replacement. It's more involved when a dealer does a crate engine or performs the repairs than you indicate, but I'm not going into anymore detail than this, since your cummins koolaid has you fogged up!
Enjoy another Koolaid! :B
