Well here's the latest - I have a camping friend that owns a classic car restoration shop. I called him to see if he could recommend a reputable shop and it turns out he and one of his mechanics can do it for about half of what I was quoted. Fifty bucks an hour plus parts, and he should have it done in a week. He'll do the water pump at the same time.
I know the guy and he is meticulous with his work and the maintenance of his stuff. The price is not as important to me as having it done right.
Thanks to all for the advice - the truck went to his shop on a flatbed today.
