Duramax Emissions issue?

Had to take my 2014 2500HD in today, engine light.. Onstar said emissions but not critical IE you can drive it. Dealer now says DEF tank issue and a sensor. $900 for the sensor, it is out of warranty, but DEF tank issue covered. Not a happy camper LOL 37,700 on the truck 2 months out of the 5 year 50K. Seems I have read about DEF Emissions issues before. Anyone else?

Usually emission components are warranted a bit longer. Even if out of warrantee, a lot of times they will cover the repair if it is just out of the warrantee period.

    X2.
Did out your paper work. Should be a seperate note on emissions warranty.
  • I have a 15 Duramax dually 3500 with 48K miles. The engine light came on last week. Took it to the dealer and the DEF tank sensor was bad. Replacing under warranty. The Service dude said it was a nation wide recall for the same thing. Call GM and appeal the charge.

The only extended warranty I've ever bought was on my new Chevy 2500HD. After all the negotiations, it was around $1700. One significant emissions related problem and the warranty pays for itself.

  • I would get on a duramax forum and do some checking on emissions/DEF tank posting. I had a similar issue on 2015 3500 that the dealer said wasn't covered. After looking on Duramax forum I found mention of a revision of the warranty to extend coverage on DEF tanks to 7yr 120k miles due to faulty heaters in DEF tank. Took the info to dealer and he confirmed it was correct and all was covered. My point is don't assume the dealer knows what is covered. There is lots of good info on some of these vehicle forums.
  • Well I went up to corporate, my third Duramax from the same dealer. Will see what they say. Otherwise..
  • This guy link seems to of had the same or simiilar prolblem. it got escelated and eventually GM paid for it.
It kinda sounds like replacing the tank atually replaces the sensor and that's why this fellow didn't end up paying (I could be mistaken). So maybe they don't understand what to bill you for.
It also sounds like it would behoove you to read your warranty information, especially the emissions stuff, very closely. You may be covered and they don't know it.

    Best of luck to you.

  • The very expensive emissions systems are part of owning a post 2007 diesel truck. That's part of the reason why I don't own one.
