Some of the guys that own inline sixes feel they have to justify their choice. I never have (whether owning a Perkins, TDI, PSD or CTD) and welcome the improved products that come from competing brands. You have to take these engines outputs with a grain of salt in the pickup line - They may put out these peaks, but torque management and drivablility software limit how often and long that occurs.
It would nice to see a FE (Fuel Efficient) variant of these diesels come out on the market, but right now you only have a choice of something around three liters then and then nothing until you are at twice the displacement. I haven't heard about good mileage figures from the Cummins 5 liter, so there is room for improvement and new products.
