I get about 16-17 MPG in my mixed cycle city/suburban commute, which I wouldn't say is abysmal at all. I actually think it's pretty darn good and it's slightly better than my previous gas V6 SUV in the same commute cycle. A Duramax should be in the same ballpark mileage wise.
A lot of iron is a lot of iron. Yes new trucks like the RAM engage the exhaust brake to load the engine to help warm up and idle can be increased with the cruise control. However I do not think my 2015 warms much faster than my 2001.5 which had high idle enabled and a Bank EB with warm up feature.
Now the aluminum 5.3 V-8 in DW Buick Rainier warms up very quickly.
