Our next TC will be something like the EC 1165. I am very much aware what these campers weigh loaded which is the reason for my recent upgrade to a Ram 5500. Even the 4500 or F450 are taxed with these larger campers if you want to tow behind them.
I have my EC 1160 on a 2012 Ram 3500 4x4 Longbed DRW, with Supersprings 6000lb plus Commercial model. Ram handles EC1160 very well. I get 13.6-13.8 mpg with my cummins 6 diesel at 60mph/95kph. Currently having shipped from US a 60 gallon Titan fuel tank, to extend range to about 800 miles/2,300 kilometers. We are in the process of installing a Porthole window on the passenger side of the Eagle Cap 1160, So there is window on both sides of the Cabover bed. I run my DRW & front wheels at 80psi with Camper loaded. We also have Front Timbrens to stop any porposing. There is a rear Helliwig Big Wig Sway Ar as well, 1.75 inch model. Vehicle glides along the road very smoothly.
Wow...I hear the weight stories from these EC owners and its scary to me. 7000+ lbs is a lot of weight. An EC 1165 on an F450 and still handling problems. And I thought I carried a heavy camper.
That camper belongs on a 4 series truck minimum. A 5 series would be even better. Ford or Dodge, take your pick. I'd choose the Dodge in the 4 and 5 range. They have sharper steering, larger fuel tanks, etc.
We got the theater seating instead of the couch in back and love being able to sit and watch TV without having to sit at the dining table. The added width is not noticeable when driving and the length is only 1.5 feet longer out the back then our old EC950, so I still get all the benefits of extra space and a couch while still having the maneuverability and ease of parking of a truck camper.
I have the Eagle Cap 1165 on an F450. It's heavy. The dry weight is 5,000 but I weighed in at almost 7,500 lbs. with a full tank of water. I'm not sure how I have that much stuff in my rig so I plan to weigh it again soon. It's way too heavy for a SRW even with 19.5" wheels.
I had the Dodge SRW with an Eagle Cap 950 and stock wheels. It handled terrible.
I went to the 19.5", Rancho shocks, and extended bump stops which handled very well. I had this setup for 7 years and was very happy.
Then I went to the stock F450 DRW with the EC 950 which handled slightly better.
Then I went to the EC1165 on the F450 which handles worse than the EC950 SRW with 19.5"s.
I already added Energy Suspension Bump Stops and added leaves to the spring pack. It is much improved with the added leaves on the spring pack. The F450 has plenty of power to still accelerates up step hills with the camper, but I still need to do some mods to improve the handling. My next mods are going to be Bilstein shocks and a Hellwig rear sway bar. Maybe 19.5" wheels some day...
I'm very jealous of people getting the 2014 F450 stock with 19.5" wheels.
On a side note to anyone getting one of these big rigs. Don't bother with airbags. I used my airbags for straight highway driving (lifting off the overload spring) and leveling at camp with my EC950. The EC1165 is too heavy and doesn't budge the camper off the overload springs.
I have an 1160, the only thing out of the norm I pack is 6 batteries, but I have no generator, so it's kind of a wash there when you compare it against 2 batts and a gen.
On a DOT scale I'm at 7250. I had an Arctic Fox 1150, loaded with 4 batts and a gen, and it was almost exactly 2,000lbs less.
