We did the Rushmore to the East Entrance at Yellowstone a couple of summers ago. We were in somewhat of a hurry. We took I-90 to Sheridan, Wy, then Rt 14 West. Outside of Sheridan there were quite a few switchbacks up the mountains and it was slow going even though we weren’t towing anything. It was definitely beautiful, but took time.
You’ll go from about 4000 ft at Sheridan and climb to over 9000 ft before dropping back down to around 4000 near Cody, then back up to around 8000 at Yellowstone if you go that way. I’ve only gone that way so I have no experience with the other routes,
The Mountain Directory sounds like a very wise investment. I guess it all depends on the amount of time you’ll be spending. Have a great time, it’s all beautiful country.
