A larger (read V8) EcoBoost engine would get terrible MPGs - likely worse than either the 8.1 or the Ford V10.
It still would have less torque than the diesel.
I can't imagine the duty cycle being what is needed for a SuperDuty/Heavy Duty truck.
But, if they could get past all that, there is no reason that the engine would be less profitable for Ford (or any other manufacture). There is nothing that says that if they built it, they could only put a $2k premium on it. If it was a good engine, and they were that worried about cannibalize diesel sales, they could simply raise the price of that engine as an option.
Simply stated, I think there are a lot of reasons you won't see a EcoBoost type engine in a SD/HD, but profitability isn't one of them.
