Ecoboost vs. V8 - Can you explain?

I'm nowhere near being a gearhead, and I can't seem to wrap my mind around how the Ecoboost outperforms the V8 in towing. I understand the fuel economy issue, but how is it that the V6 can actually have a higher tow rating than the V8? Can anyone explain in layman's terms?

  • If you forget about descriptive terms like v6 and v8 and just look at the specs, it's pretty obvious. The Ecoboost builds twist early in the RPMs and applies it continuously. The v8 has to wind up before it achieves similar power. The v8 has a little more horse power, but it's only available at wide open throttle at very high RPMs. All the rest of the time the Ecoboost will be the more powerful engine.
