I'm surprised the temps hit 244F on that climb.
I wonder if the 3.92 gears would've helped keep things a bit cooler.
Then again, it could probably run 244F for days on end with no negative long-term effects, as oil & coolant have come a long way.
I've quit fretting that my 5.4L F250 runs 220-225F; its run those temps (per ScanGauge II) since I bought it and purrs along without issue.
I would get your fluid exchanged. My top temp (per Scangauge II) was 202 and that was towing 9K over an 11K pass in Colorado. Usually in the 180's towing and the 170's not towing.
When I first saw those temps (right after buying it almost 2 years ago) I couldn't get to the dealer fast enough for a coolant exchange-- I fully expected temps to go down, but they didn't change a bit. Went with a brand new thermostat next (cheap enough)- still no change. I keep the oil fresh, buy good fuel, still runs those temps. All these months later, I've realized it isn't going to grenade at 225F so I don't give it a 2nd thought anymore...though it is mysterious, as it runs hotter than most other 5.4's, according to other owners I've talked to.
Selling or trading it in on something newer over the summer anyhow...
