I'm surprised the temps hit 244F on that climb.
I wonder if the 3.92 gears would've helped keep things a bit cooler.
Then again, it could probably run 244F for days on end with no negative long-term effects, as oil & coolant have come a long way.
I've quit fretting that my 5.4L F250 runs 220-225F; its run those temps (per ScanGauge II) since I bought it and purrs along without issue.
I would get your fluid exchanged. My top temp (per Scangauge II) was 202 and that was towing 9K over an 11K pass in Colorado. Usually in the 180's towing and the 170's not towing.
Your temps seem low. Have you changed thermostats? I did a quick search and the OEM stat is 193/203. Cruising a 170 would mean it's stuck partially open.
Not sure where you got your information but my thermostat fully opens at 186 just like it is supposed to. I can watch the temps nosedive back into the 170's and then they creep back up again. It partially (10%) opens at 165 and that is the design for my 5 speed.
