Well that could be said for the Ford Eco-Boost engines also. A V-6 gas with twin turbos towing a 7-10,000# TT will be at WOT and full boost also.

Full boost maybe but definitely not WOT.
You really don't get the low-RPM torque thing ... :)
Well explain it then, keeping in mind the Ram will have an 8 speed trans and the Ford is running a 6 speed. You do know that the Ford EB does or did do the same thing right? Even towing no where near it's tow rating. Here is a guy towing a 7-8,000# reporting overheating at high altitude. LINK
So given the fact that the test truck they used was not really set up for towing, 3:55 gears not the 3:93's. Considering "We saddled up the EcoDiesel first and loaded it up to 105 percent of its gross combined vehicle weight (GCVW) rating of 12,800 pounds. The Ram 1500 had no issues accelerating from a stop, getting up to speed, or slowing back down." Read More. I have said it meany times but I'll say it yet again, THIS TRUCK IS NOT INTENDED TO TOW A HEAVY RV!
But given the fact that Ford owners were reporting over heating well below their trucks rated 11,500# tow rating I would say the little under powered Eco-Diesel did better then the Eco-Boost.
Has Ford addressed the over heating issues? Yes they have, but given the Ram was overloaded and not equipped with the correct gears for towing, I would say it did a damn good job.
Also remember they reported it achieved 19.46 MPG fully loaded. The 2014 F-150 Ecoboost is rated at 17/23 mpg. So the Ram beat the EB's city mileage TOWING over loaded and was only 3.5 MPG less then the F-150's highway mileage. Note that the Ford mileage is UNLOADED and would be a stripper model set up for the Government EPA rating tests.
Don
Whoa, slow down. I'm not knocking the Ecodiesel, it's a fine engine as far as I'm concerned.
All I was pointing out was that the Ecoboost doesn't need to run WOT to get it's MAX torque. Max torque is way down low. It's like a diesel that way, but trades off the diesel mileage for greater HP.
I've pulled my 7500# trailer up many steep hills and never had to go WOT. But for sure, when it's running full boost, even at lower rpms, it may be sucking gas as if you were WOT on a non-turbo gasser.
Thanks for that link about the Ecoboost over-heating at high elevations when towing heavy and steep. Sounds like it needs better cooling under those extreme conditions. And I can give you an example of cooked brakes going down a steep, long, windy Appalachian grade.
Every truck has its limits, including EcoDiesel and EcoBoost trucks, and it's good to know what they are.
