Ecodiesel: 19.46 MPG Towing 7,020 lbs.

dieselpowermag.com: Ram 1500 Ecodiesel vs. Ram 2500 CTD comparison (dated Feb 24,2014).

In this comparison the Ram 1500 Ecodiesel got 19.46 MPG towing a 7,020 lb. load on a 260 mile loop that included a drive up a 7% grade to 5,000 ft. of elevation. They did report high engine temps during the climb, which subsided at the summit. Not sure what to make of that issue. They were towing a 2 axle trailer with a mid-sized, off-road 4x4 vehicle loaded on it. Obviously not a lot of frontal wind resistance, but still impressive. FWIW, their test truck had a 3.55 rear end. A 3.92 rear end is available as an option and would have increased tow capacity.

Sure, the jury is still out. But, all these initial tests are looking very promising--especially in terms of realworld, obtainable MPG numbers. Can't wait to get some real feedback, from real owners, as soon as a few thousand of these puppies get on the road.

This is definitely not enough truck for a lot of folks here. But, for those folks on RV.NET that tow smaller TT's, the Ecodiesel could be a very attractive option.

  • Pretty impressive on the 1500 to say the least. I could see a family of 4 with a 4000lb boat and camping gear buying one and never run out of payload at the same time getting great mpg's.
Hitching up a TT to the 1500 would be a different story. But it will be done no doubt. The next 6-8 month when people start buying them and hitching up will tell the story.
  • I have learned over many a year not to believe everything you read about vehicles. The only proof of the pudding is how it works in the real world where everything is not tweeked and fiddled with before the drive.

My truck got rave reviews when it first came out and I bought it new, but it sort of fell flat on its face when maintenance problems started showing up. I have been lucky in that regard my maintenance problems and cost have been minimal, but others have not been so fortunate.
  • It's not enough truck to hold 5 large adults, let alone a driver and 7k pound RV. Please Ram, work on that payload! I'd love to see something like Ford's HD 8200GVWR package on it!
  • Almost too good to be true. I wonder if this was hand calculated or were they going by Rams infamous Lie-O-meter.
  • That is pretty impressive. As for the Cummins, no surprise there, it has always been impressive. Can't wait to see the 5.0 Cummins in the Titan.
