There's quite a bit of that on the web (talk of problems with carbon build up), but I'm not sure how widespread it is in the real world.
I drive a direct injected BMW and BMW has an apparatus that bolt onto the induction side of the head and blasts the carbon buildup with walnut shells. It appears to work very well.
