You can back up with any hitch. Turning too sharp can possibly be a problem... Going forwards OR backwards. Some jacknife their TTs pretty hard when backing up, so they prefer to remove the sway control prior to backing up... Also the instructions say to remove it when backing, and turning sharp.
you "can" actually pull the bar out far enough to put it in a bind when turning back the other way, and some people have pushed it in far enough the other way to break off a mounting ball.
Having said that. I don't remove mine when doing normal backing. Only when I have to really jack it in. If you saw where I park it. You would understand
