As for what scenario would let you out the window but not the door, If your awning collapses, it will block your door and could put a surprising force against it to prevent you from opening the door.
Ever see how much a few wraps of shrinkwrap can hold? Your awning is likely much stronger that shrinkwrap- especially if one arm twisted and the awning roller tube fell against the camper door :E
The egress window would not need to pivot, so even if blocked, you would have a better chance of pushing it slightly and climbing over/through any obstacle.
Or, you could just cut the canvass ;)
