For one reason or another, I've never felt comfortable using the furnace while asleep. As a result I use 1 or 2 electric heaters during the night - depending on the outside temp.
I set them up in the living area and keep the temps about 50F - sometimes when the thermostat kicks in, it tends to wake me up. I don't use a heater in the bedroom due to the whirring noise of the fan.
Once I wake up, i turn on the furnace to get the temp up to 70 and then use the electric fan (usually one) to maintain the temp.
Has worked well for us for the last 20?? years.
