electric jack or manual

Ok so back in July we were camping in Erie PA, and when I went to lower the jack on my trailer the handle just kept on spinning. So i couldn't get the trailer off of the truck. I opened up the top of the jack and the pin that goes through the handle was broke. I luckily had some steel wire and was able to make the repair and it is still holding up.

The trailer is older and I'm thinking of replacing the jack, because I'm afraid it will fail again. So this brings me to my question.
1) Is it worth the extra money for an electric jack?
2) Should I just go with manual jack because of the age of trailer and will most likely be selling in the next few years?

Thanks

  • I am one who thinks that every travel trailer of any size should have an electric jack. Naturally, those of us who use our travel trailers to travel benefit more than those who only move their trailer a couple of times a year. For twice a year, I would keep the crank version.
  • Yes, an electric jack is worth the extra cost.

Think of the extra convenience to you as the owner, not whether or not you can recover the cost if/when you eventually sell the trailer.
  • They are actually fairly affordable, depending on how much wieght you need to move. Get one, your back will thank you.
  • If you go for an electric lift, you'll be glad you did. I wouldn't have one without it. Shop around, they aren't real expensive if you get one on sale.
  • I don't know the cost of an electric jack verses the cost of a new manual one, but if it were me and this trailer is headed for the sales lot I would just keep it simple. There is a good bet you won't recover the cost of the electric when it goes up for sale. If it is a behemoth and heavy then I might consider making the change over
