That's the reason we use the Duraflame. You can't touch the heated area - it is way inside the unit, plus, they are impossible to upturn. Our oil-filled was knocked over and one of the coils split, spilling oil all over the floor. It was HOT oil and was a bear to get up, did some damage to the flooring and I had no idea it could do that.

Another reason was that one of them exploded, caught fire and burned up a neighbor and her child during the night. They scare me now.
