Big issues with electric cars are:
I need to add that although I'm retired, my wife and I like to go for very long drives through our countryside...in these conditions. We cannot rely on a pure electric vehicle at it's present state of the art. Possibly a hybrid with gas/electric...when electric power goes, we've got an ICE to see us through.
- Distance range. I'm retired, so I'm not working anymore. When I worked I would put 30-50 miles, sometimes 150 miles on my vehicle in one day. Travel of 30-50 miles per day probably workable....that is until my two kids got their driver's license and sometimes would put an awful lot of miles on in the evening. I have to be able to have a vehicle that is ready to go anywhere from 30-150 miles per day...without charging time during that work day.
- I live in a climate where winter is here, late October till late March...sometimes longer...+/-. Spates of -30 are not uncommon. Travel distance between towns can be 120 to 400 miles...often without any significant centers between point a and b. Batteries struggle with very cold temps like this, from what I understand losing power more rapidly. You don't want to be at the side of a lonely winter road, with no power, no heat, no nothing in -30.
- Range and very cold weather function must be improved to function in these, not unusual conditions. Remember not everybody lives in southern California or the Greater Toronto area..Until there is marked improvement in range and battery performance in very cold temps...I'm afraid the pure electric car is the car of the dilettante or as a second vehicle to an ICE vehicle.
