If you were towing with a gasser you had pretty much the same engine brake you have now. In very simple terms the exhaust brake on a diesel serves the same purpose as the throttle plate on a gas engine for braking. The systems now also integrate automatic transmission shifts where you had to do that yourself back in the day.
