All this debate is very nice, BUT the bottom line is if you want confident controlled descent on a steep grade or any grade choose what speed you are comfortable with and manually select the gear that puts you in about 2500RPM's or more at that speed. It's SO simple, just TRY IT!!!
Bottom line experiment.
Pretty much what I do, as I said on page 4 :B
I LIKE to experiment while driving, like when coming to a up hill grade you know you will be dropping a gear on. I drop a gear and lightly apply pedal pressure then let off when the pedal goes down. What that does is keeps the speed from dropping from a set 60 to 57 then having to play catch up and using more fuel. Computers are great but so far they can not see what is ahead.
Big problem is these people that get a Diesel with EB/TH for the first time. All I can say to them is to listen to others that have been there and done that and simply have an open mind and play with all the settings.
I will say descending with cruise on feels strange at first! Just get used to the + and - for speed control with your thumb. No different than the brake pedal and accelerator pedal.
