equal i zer question

Last time I towed, I noticed a lot of push/pull. I use the equalizer wdh antisway 1000/10000. I yanked the assembly off, checked tq settings etc. I noticed that the center bolt didnt have any of the washers for spacing on the center bolt. Would these washers make that big of a diff?? See attached pic...

Tv is 2013 ram laramie 4x4. Tt is 2014 bullet 281bhs. Tow with 1/3 fresh water.

  • That bolt in the picture is not supposed to have any washers. It is simply a jam bolt to help keep the hitch head in position. The washers should be on a pin located above that bolt and between the hitch head and the shank. They determine the amount of tilt on the head.
See #26,27 and #19 in the following parts breakdown.
    Equal-i-zer parts breakdown

If that bolt pictured is not tightened up against the shank then the whole head could possibly shift back and forth and may be what you were experiencing, especially if the two large bolts holding the hitch head onto the shank were not torqued to specs. I believe the torque on those two bolts is in the neighborhood of 350 -450 lbs.

  • I use the referenced hitch and agree with Barney. However, for clarification, my manual indicates the 3/4" shank bolts (15) should be tightened to 320 ft/lbs and not over-tightened. That's the last items tightened after setting 19, 26, & 27.
  • Yes, as others said the washers go on the pin that you can view by looking down at the top of hitch. The bottom bolt that you have pictured gets snugged up to help help everything tight.

Also. I noticed no grease on the friction surfaces of the hitch. Or did you just wipe it off for the picture?
  • When I was home from Pakistan and we did our trip to S. Texas I got something similar on the second leg of the trip from Austin to Houston. The little bolt you see on yours kept loosening up on mine no matter how much I tightened it (didn't have a torque wrench with me on the road). I ended up using some blue Loctite on it but it still loosened up as the trip went on. I also discovered how much the washers made a difference. I am still baffled how a 1/8" piece of metal can make such a huge change.

There is a post further up about not having enough truck to tow your trailer. I am towing a slightly smaller TT with a similar truck and had no power, stopping, or any other issues after I got the hitch adjusted as best as I could. I still have a long way to go on figuring it out and getting it completely right though. I was apprehensive before pulling our TT with our Half ton truck but the only thing that really bothered me was the fuel mileage of a bit over 8mpg. Not bad considering my 2011 2500 only would do 10-11mpg by itself with no load (diesel).

How I left from picking it up form getting repaired. First trip with truck and setting up hitch.

After asking for some advice here and making some adjustments. Still not correct and even thought the picture does not reflect it the front is at normal height and the rear is the same height as front with was roughly 1.5-2.25" from normal ride.
  • By push/pull, do you meean like it's pulling sideways, especially after a tight turn? If so, just lube it good. The sockets that the bars go into need to be lubed so that they move freely. (Progress sells grease for it, or you can use any heavy weight grease.)
