I do know that I towed close to 100,000 miles with my first EQUALIZER (12K) before the jackets were available. My second one (14K) has about 60K on it with the jackets.
The jackets DO make it quieter, and the DO make for much less wear on the bars and L brackets.
And I have experienced no downsides.
