That puts you in the upper end of 1/2 ton trucks (ie: they come in different payload & power flavors and you wan the higher end payload in particular). The small pickups will at best be right at the limits and miserable towing.
If you are loading up with kids and have the bed of the truck packed with firewood and stuff, you are borderline where a 3/4 ton makes more sense.
Power with modern trucks is not really a problem. They make incredible power compared to 20-30yrs ago.
- When people get excited about diesel, they are typically talking about the 3/4 & 1 ton trucks with the bigger diesel engines. The smaller ones in 1/2 ton trucks are adequate but they aren't the beasts people typically go on about.
- Give serious consideration to the turbo charged gas engines (like Fords Ecoboost line). That gives you the low end torque and the turbo compensates for thin air at altitude.
PS: talk about battery powered trucks is fun but unless you enjoy being on the Bleeding edge (not a typo), you don't want to find out the real problems the hard way. The battery powered cars currently in production rely heavily on being being small and aerodynamic to get range. Strap a 4 ton brick to the rear bumper and you will be neither. Now in 5-10yrs after they have been out and proved themselves...maybe it will be different...maybe it won't.
