Yes it is somewhat 'automatic' to apply the brakes. Just stay in the tow haul mode, then tap the brakes a few times as you decend the hill.
It will not be as strong as a 'jake brake' and the transmission is not really able to handle a full 200 braking horsepower because it is the rear axle pushing the transmission internals that is pushing on the engine, and not the other way around (such as when driving away from a stop sign).
So you get what you have. Anything much stronger in the compression braking department might break the transmission! At least it is much better than what was offered 20 years ago! my buddy's 1985 F-250 would go to idle when going down a hill, and not offer ANY compression braking at all!
