exaust brake and downshifting

Hi, been reading this topic and found it somewhat interesting. I have a 2015 2500 Big Horn Cummins, all the bells and whistles, recently while traveling west, going down Donner Pass, T/H and E/B (yellow) engaged, slowed to 45 mph at the top of grade started decent, truck down shifted E/B kicked in, foot off accelerator, speed increased to 60, started to ride brakes, regular run-away, 3rd gear and screaming close to "red line". Sounded like a F-4 on the cats waiting for the "GO". Trying to hold back a Keystone Cougar F/W 11,450, Pucker factor +2. But I made it!!

No offense, but you probably should read the owners manual and do some more experimenting with you EB settings and how they're used. I travel over Donner Pass 4 times a year and my trailer is just a bit lighter than yours. I smile all the way down the backside of the pass whichever direction and rarely use the service brakes.

I just flick the shifter mounted PacBrake switch. If necessary I depress the clutch and drop a gear. :B

Oh, you must be talking the newer fancy diesels. :S

Ya, get tired of sitting in truck reading manual, then "refer to CD" and then "refer to U-Connect", then refer to manual. 4 hrs since august with the truck idling trying to figure this out, everyday is something different, a couple close calls (disasters) hitching and unhitching with this "Air-ride" system, so far no real damage!!! Just new experiences/challenges. Dan

I have experimented a LOT! My combined load is 32,500#. I use TH and EB ALL the time towing or not. For towing think about what gear you came up the grade in now manually select that gear and set cruise to 55 for example. On 6% downhill grades I may touch the brakes once or twice then just hit cruise again. Works great just experiment. The FACT is the higher the RPM's are the more holding power the engine has. 2500 and higher will work great and will NOT hurt a thing. It will be louder thats for sure but a small price to pay for a confident and controlled down hill experience!!!

I'm the same way with my 2011 but the newer Rams with 2 stage EB's might be different.

They are...I ALWAYS use EB and T/H when towing, and I too will use cruise control at times coming down a mountain...more apt to keep at speed you want.

Plus you can see what gear you're in by tapping the manual shift button. Turns on the gear selector lights
