If he stays under his axle and tire ratings he'll be fine. The difference between his truck and a SRW 3500 is just a softer rear spring pack, or maybe a missing overload spring, or in some cases maybe nothing. His payload is low because 10,000 lbs is the max GVWR allowed for a class 2 truck, and his truck weighs a lot. It has nothing to do with capability. I would assume his rear axle rating is in the neighborhood of 6500 lbs, and his tires should be above that.
