In Tx, he can get the truck registered for a higher GVWR, just cost more. In fact it is a good idea to check the current registration. Dealers doing the initial registration sometimes don't even bother to get the truck registered for it's stated GVWR. My previous 3/4 ton was listed at 7000 lbs dry + 1500 lbs capacity (3/4 ton) = 8500 lbs GVWR when listed GVWR was 9200 lbs. I re-registered it to 10,000 lbs.
