I don't think they had the yellow stickers in 2005, that is a fairly recent addition. I believe that the X only came from the factory with 3.73 gears and that is what the tow rating is based on. I know a few guys that went to 4.30's and towing performance was greatly increased. Depending on where you have the work done, cost will be $1500-$2000 for both axles.
Folks generally agree that the X is under-rated considering it shares much of its running gear with the F-350. The limiting factor is the receiver, which IIRC is rated at 1100 lbs and cannot be changed or upgraded. How heavy is the TT you are looking to tow?
