I have a 2000 Ex with V10 and 430 gears. It tows like a bear. The Ex never got the 3 valve engine like the trucks and vans and the original diesel was the 7.3 but went to the 6.0 a troubled engine. As for the hitch....be careful replacing it as it was part of the structure as required by fed regulations NOT just a hitch. That's why there are no replacements certified except from Ford.
