There's almost literally no difference. And it should be last on your list of priorities. 1/2 ton older suvs get say 13-15mpg bobtail and 3/4 tons 12-14 mpg and both drink like sailors once the hitch gets something on it.
You're on the right track with private owner and lots of questions. Far more info or "history" to be gained vs a dealer who wouldn't tell you the history if they knew it, unless they were lying...
