Expedition vs Suburban

We are currently towing our 2013 Passport Elite 28bh with our LR3. We use a 4 point Equal-I-zer hitch and Prodigy brake controller. It actually tows well . But soon it'll be time to trade my vehicle in and I'm thinking having a secondary stronger tow vehicle won't hurt .

The TT is 5460 actual dry weight, GVWR 7500, 30 feet long.

The Expy is a 2009 with heavy duty tow package rated for 9100.
The Suburban is a 2008 with tow up to 8100.

Obviously the Suburban has a longer wheel base but 8100 tow seems low . I like things about both. Thinking we would be fine with either.

Oh and as far as payload, they are pretty similiar. For now, not really an issue as it is 2 adults and 2 young children . All gear goes in the tt.

Any thoughts ??

  • Since I am towing with an Expedition, and have had no issues, I will go with what I know
  • Please forgive me - I know it wasn't one of the choices you gave, but don't forget the Ford E350. It does kinda take you out of the neighborhood's fanciest SUV competion if you're into that kind of thing, but I think it gets the TV job done better than either. It carries much more cargo, carries up to 11 adults comfortably, and tows more weight with more stability. It's very comfortable as a daily driver, too. I traded my Expedition in on one after reading somewhere on this forum that it's a good choice. I wish I had looked into them earlier.
  • Expy is independant rear. I dont have a personal opinion but i remember reading somthing here about how thats not ideal for towing. Somthing to research anyhow.
  • Love my Expy! Great tow vehicle and my TT is very similar in size and weight to yours. The HD towing package has more than adequate towing power for all terrain and the tow haul feature works with you on grades ascending and descending. Plus, the 3rd row seat is probably power which is much easier than having to remove seats as in the 'burb plus the seats fold flat for easier loading and unloading. For me, the Expy is a far superior TV.
  • I would go with the burb. I did not like towing with mine, but I am used to big trucks.
  • Which ever you like best. I have a 2007 Suburban 1500 and I towed a Passport 28BH for 3 years and now tow a KZ at 5000lb with no problems. The Suburban still gives you 2500 pounds of cargo capacity ( including people ) so go with what vehicle you like best. Both should handle what you need.
  • Personally I would go with the longer wheel base. I think it gives you more control.
