The reason we like that X-cab is safer storage inside - away from theft, but also out of the weather. the longer trucks are simply too difficult to park, can't fit in garage, and not quite as easy to drive in town.
SO, to us, even the older style, with added space behind the seats (like the original S-10, only a full-size truck. Single cab has no space there, even for a few items, like a briefcase or such.
Our rear seats are 'short' and fold up, so multi-purpose. Now, it seems like PU Trucks are getting to be like 4-door sedan with no trunk, just an open spot in the back ...
Problem with some designs, that double-cab with long-bed must be like driving a bus down the housing streets. I know, some like it, big family. But, not everyone has a big family, and kids fit fine in those short seats.
IF it was me designing. I'd do away with the single cab full-size PU - anyone that uses that can probably get along with the mid-size truck, like the Colorado, and then stay with X-cab and Dual cab, with short or long bed. But to lengthen the cab and shorten the bed, makes no sense.
I can't think if a single PU owner who would give up that rear-seat storage, but it doesn't have to be a full seat with streeeeeeeeeeeeeetch leg room - just a place to 'hold stuff' protected, and occasionally, the kids come along.
