Extended warranty or not.

I have a 2011 LTZ Chevy Silverado HD 4 wheel-drive awe-some truck.I tow a Cedar Creek 34.5 long.I just found out the shifting module needs to be replaced $800 bucks.I don't have the bumper to bumper , it expired I haven't had any other issues to speak of.What do you guys recommend should I buy the extended warranty? if so with GMC ?

  • It's a gamble. Chances are most people will never use it enough to make it worth the cost. OTOH, on the only new vehicle I ever purchased an extended warranty for, I had a repair that cost twice what the warranty cost, about a month before it expired, so it paid off.

I have yet to purchase another extended warranty...
  • I appreciate all the advice you guys have given me.I thank you and I will put my money in the bank.I appreciate this forum!
  • Apples and oranges being tossed around here. Aftermarket company warranties are totally useless and not worth the paper they are written on. These companies are famous for splitting hairs and writing contracts that get them out of 75% of repairs. Their next line of defense is to just go out of business (change names) every few years, leaving any current policy owners out of luck.

Factory backed warranties (called service contracts in most states) are a whole different beast. They are a rip-off when bought in the cubicle at the time of purchase for the price first offered. But they can pay off if you keep the vehicle for a long time and don't plan on doing a bunch of "mods" that void the warranty. They are good for repair at any dealer and are the way to go if you want to get a warranty. And if you purchase a factory warranty, shop the price online. You can buy from any dealer in the US (or beyond?). I paid $2200 to a dealer over 1000 miles away from me for a warranty that my selling scumbag dealer was offering me for over $4,000

It is true that in the long run a warranty is a bad bet but if you're the rare guy that has a tranny or engine failure you don't care that the other 999 guys didn't have it happen to them.
  • What I suggest is researching to see if there are any big issues that could crop-up down the road that the warranty has a chance of covering. If not, put it in the bank. If so, then decide if you want the peace of mind or not. At least that would give you a decent idea on whether or not you need something. Personally for an electronic unit such as what you replaced, that wouldn't trigger me to buy an extended warranty.
  • Extended warranties are just like any other insurance. You are betting something will need repair, the warranty company sets their fees to cover the likelihood you will not and to make a profit.

I suspect you have life insurance, insurance on you home, car, perhaps even a home warranty program. Only you can decide if it is worthwhile, I decide not; but it is inaccurate to state they are a rip off. Many are offered by reputable companies that provide a fair service.
  • I have a 2011 and it has never been worked on and it has 60K on it. I also run an 08 2500 D/A with 101K and it has never missed a day of work due to a repair. Have yet to put anything into besides maintenance. I would keep your money. These GMT900's have been around awhile, I think they are pretty well tightened up. The only issue you hear much about is DEF issues on the 11's.
  • Let me emphasize what has already been stated: NO! put the money in the bank and have your spare cash for when something crops up. Extended warrantys are only good for the people who sell them, they are a real money maker because the majority of claims are denied.
