Commercially available composting toilets are expensive, but you are paying for R&D, design, and service for a low volume product. You can certainly assemble one yourself, but it is less likely to be compact, water resistant, etc. None that I know of are as much as $1,000.
One quibble however, the Nature's Head, at least, uses next to no current and it doesn't keep turning. It does have a small fan which is optional. As mine is in a wet bath, water is a big issue and I plan to upgrade my grey water stack with one of these: 360 siphon It gets good press here and elsewhere. - wvabeerExplorer

Dig a hole and make a temp. outhouse cover and move when its full. A bucket buddy on a 5 gallon bucket and no bottom.
At one time this was common, but I have to respectfully disagree with this approach now. Liquid waste is generally no problem (except concentrated in a desert environment), but solid waste just isn't acceptable anymore when the means to carry it out is available (i.e.; a vehicle). Sure, if you are backpacking away from other people then it is understandable (some places even require backpackers to carry out their solid waste). But it's no fun camping in what you think a pristine location, only to have used TP blowing around....or your dog digging up a tasty treat and then licking your face, or your child picking up a rock only to discover...... Also, such cat holes attract higher numbers of insects, birds, and other animals (such as bears) which bring their own set of problems to an area. So if you can drive there, then please have a plan to haul solid waste out.
As to the temporary outhouse .... whatever floats your boat. They do sell nifty outhouse tents if you feel the need. Or, the portable toilet (that collects solid waste) can simply be set up behind a bush, tree, or rock and gosh, the folks you are with really don't want to watch so will avert their eyes even if you are right in the middle of camp (have had to do this on a number of occasions...it's life folks).
I have no have intent to start a shouting match over this and I seldom post a response like this, but in this case, I felt it appropriate educate folks as to what is appropriate in today's world.
Happy camping all,
Steve

Yes. I am emptying my Black tank, and grey tank, through the garden hose attached to the cap on my dump pipe.bka0721 wrote:
O.K., when you have those items, take the short garden hose and attach it to the locking cap for your sewer pipe. To determine the length of garden hose, set Fuel Jug of Sealed bucket so 2 to 3 inches of hose extends into the top of the Jug or hose. Practice with your Grey Tank. You will see that when shutting the valve, it will take a few ounces before dripping stops, as does your back tank valve. This will foam (from urine) so it gives you good warning as the Jug/Bucket fills up. This Jug can then be disposed of, much as a Cassette Toilet Capsule is done.
Good suggestions , I employ several even for my relatively short stays .
Perhaps I'm reading this wrong . Are you emptying the black tank through a 3/4" garden hose ? If so , doesn't it clog with the solids ?
If you look through my “Parts List” you will see all you need to create a Compost Toilet, without spending a Thousand dollars and use lots of battery power in running the motor to keep it turning. I compost my solids. Never using my black tank for anything but fluids, so contents do flow through the sectioned garden hose. But, I did provide details on how to use your Black Tank/toilet for both solids and liquids to extend the length between trips to a dump station.
Looks like the OP is done with this thread and does not want any additional comments, so I suspect it will be closed now. This was a good discussion, none the less.

Did you install a second drain port so it could be emptied in place ?
Yes.
Drilled a hole in bottom edge of blue boy, install valve + detachable hose.
Dump TC into top of bb.
At dump station, dump bb and TC.
It was all very easy and worked well on the old TC. - DiploStratExplorerConsider a composting toilet. Go from two to six weeks with daily use by two adults. We never use campground toilets.
And, when it does come time to dump, you are talking about a dry mixture that smells like dirt. On short trips, we bring it home to our compost heap. On longer trips you can use s dump station with water, bury, trash, or other options, like cow pastures or manure heaps. - ticki2Explorer

Not the best pic...but you can see the blue-boy on the rack underneath. We already had the blue-boy and the rack so this was an easy solution when we need more tank capacity. We could drain either grey or black into the bb.

I really like that idea. On the mods list for future TC should I need more tank... - billtexExplorer IINot the best pic...but you can see the blue-boy on the rack underneath.
