I always add grease between the seal lips and inside the shell of the seal to keep the surface lubricated.
That damage to the seal is exactly what often happens during a mandatory Pennsylvania State inspection. They just bang the seal against the spindle end as they rush thru the job. Often, they don't even remove the wheel from the hub to save time.
