Only due to increased HP in the F150 and better brakes in the current F150. My 1979 F250 had four piston front disk, and 12" X 3" rear drums, it had a lot of whoa power!
It is the strength and redundancy of the frame and running gear! While they keep raising the tow ratings of the 150/1500, it is still build like a large car and gives a car like ride. 150/1500 as a rule have car like axes and suppression, while 250/2500 and 350/3500 run running gear like larger trucks far more substantial! The high payload 150/1500's are getting their numbers running at or very near total axle ratings!
