It's rather odd that the engineers are way off base with the 1/2 ton ratings. But those same engineers that rate the 3/4 & 1 tons, got it right. :S
If you hang around long enough, and read between the lines, there is a lot of machismo, compensating, and purchase justifying that goes on that flies in the face of reality. A lot of very uniformed posters as well.
In just about all aspects, a properly equipped F150 will out tow just about any 3/4 ton from 10 years ago. The handling, stability, frame strength, engineering complexity, and the suite of safety technologies is so far ahead of trucks 15 years ago.
Payload is even comparable, but some folks love their full floating axles and twisty C channel "heavy duty" frames of years past.
They "don't make'm like they used to" and all that "new-fangled stuff" are common place in conversations with these folks.
