So, original poster, are you ready to curl up on the floor and suck your thumb yet?
Somewhere between the "I've done it and it's just fine(s)," and the "I would never ever tow XXX with YYY," resides the truth.
The truth of the matter is the tow rating you got out of the manual is the MAXIMUM value under IDEAL conditions. Nobody's is ever maximum or ideal.
It's a good idea to get the REAL weight of your truck to see where you stand with regards to the ratings. Almost 100% of the time, you are heavier than you think you are, and have less available capacity than you think you do.
You can also ignore the ratings, hitch up, and go. Some people do that and are perfectly happy with the result.
Honestly, everything is basically as I expected. I just like all the info possible at my disposal. Since over-loading a "half-ton" truck is something I do regularly for work, payload doesn't bother me, and I don't mind beating up my truck so it blows up in 5 years (it won't, I've tried).
One thing I did take out is that I think I am going to upgrade to a Class V hitch.
You are from Rochester? I am from Canandaigua. I've mostly gone to the Old Forge area or the Finger Lakes. Any suggestions on other places to go for a weekend?
