So true ... it seems that 'experience' is often not a benefit to many who refuse to accept progress. You could make a long list of rules and guidelines that are often cited here that really are long outdated and simply inapplicable. Yet people cling to them and spout them out like they were the gospel truth. Some of my favorites:
1) transmission fluid should never go over 200*, and there is a 'chart' to prove it.
2) 3000 mile oil changes
3) never exceed 80% of your vehicle's ratings
4) towing in OD will kill your transmission.
