That just doesn't leave much room for family and anything in the truck, and is the biggest issue with 1/2 tons. Their limits aren't really negotiable, unlike SRW HD trucks.
So what is it about HD trucks that makes their mfgr ratings 'negotiable' ? Similarly, what makes said ratings on a 1/2 ton not negotiable or dubious?
Seems like a curious and self-serving statement ...
I already posted that in this thread, 2 days ago.
But the cliffs notes are a 2500 and 3500 SRW are built on the same chassis as a 3500 DRW, with the same drive-train, axles, etc. The limitation on a SRW is the wheels/tires. If those are upgraded it is within the design specs of the remaining parts to carry more weight.
If you upgrade the wheels/tires on a LD truck it doesn't do much, if anything, for extra weight as the chassis and drive-train are already at their limit. There is a little wiggle room, such as on a F-150 w/out the HD Payload package. If wheels and tires where installed that could hold 4800lbs on the rear axle it would be fine to exceed the door sticker as you are still within the limits of the components (but to note that 100% of the limit of the axle, whereas on my truck the highest RAWR that axle has from Dodge is still only 86% of the mfgr rating).
Do you know, because I haven't looked into it, do all F-150's of the same cab/bed config use the same frame? Regardless of engine or GVWR?
Make sense? It's not meant to be a self-serving statement, it's a conclusion based on actual ratings (not door ratings) of parts used.
It's about knowing the actual ratings, not the paper ratings assigned by the mfgr.. as many of those are built around marketing and sales. A 3/4 ton has a lower GVWR/GCWR than a 1 ton SRW because they need to be different. Both GM and Dodge have gone thru periods where all 1 Tons where dually's, because a SRW 3500 is really not needed but the customers wanted one so they sell them, despite the lack of actual physical differences.
