I've been following this thread, as I'm going to be in the market for a new truck next year. I'm not really a pick up truck guy (I know "GASP") and frankly would rather have an SUV, which I currently tow with.
My SUV is now going on 12 years old, which is why I'm starting to look, and while it is low mileage and in perfect condition, it is a little light in the towing department -typical SUV. We have no problem whatsoever towing our current trailer, but want to buy a slightly larger one in the future. We're two people camping, so a few more feet is all we'll ever go, so to get a F-250 or 2500 series truck would be ridiculous, especially since towing is only a small fraction of what we would use it for.
I've been interested in the F150 EB. A friend has an F-150 with the smaller EB engine and loves it. The only thing he tows, though, is a small landscape trailer. As far as trucks go, it is pretty nice.
I've been looking at specs from the manufacturers web sites to try to narrow down my search. I've looked at Ford, GM and Ram. A couple of things I've noticed with regards to Ram is low towing and payload. What I would be looking at, the payload on the Ram would be 1400#. That's incredibly low, and perhaps why they recommend a 2500 for towing? It's not really that much higher than my current SUV, so a purchase of a Ram wouldn't allow me to get a bigger trailer. Also, the dial shifter is hideous. I rented a 200 (POS) that had a dial shifter and hated it. I guess I've ruled out Ram!
I'll be honest, this is the first I've heard about problems Iwith squirrelly suspension on the Ford. Certainly something I'll research a little more before buying. My main concern is ensuring this is the last tow vehicle I'll buy for some time, and I want to make sure I make no mistakes. Again, I won't buy a trailer much over 6000# or so, so the 2500 series trucks are overkill.
Thanks, all!
