-3.55 axle or 3.73 axle.
With your smallish trailer I'd go with the 3.55. You'll be within the towing limits and will get better fuel economy.
-Will the shorter wheel base super crew cab be a good stable platform. (the short wheel base will fit in our garage).
yes. We tow a 35' hitch to bumper 9900 GVWR travel trailer with an 11 F150 Supercrew shortbed with max tow. Using an Equalizer hitch it is very stable. The wife will even drive the combo.
-How is gas mileage while towing, current vehicle gets in the 10MPG range and would like something that gets at least that.
You'll be around that - we're 8-10 towing ours. Hills sometimes lower.
-How is the gas mileage when not towing.
I've got the 3.73 rear with 4x4 in the previous generation and can kiss 20 if I'm careful.
-Would you tow cross-country with an ecoboost, as we are looking to take a trip from southwest Ohio to the Grand Canyon. And in future years we want to take a trip to Yellowstone.
I'd leave tomorrow if it weren't for work.
-How are these trucks for reliability, I am a firm believer in preventive maintenance so neglecting any and all required maintenance it not something I do with my vehicles.
I own 2 EB 3.5s, one in a car with 116k and no issues. The truck just rolled 80k and no issues either. They are aging and outside some early issues (timing chains) the engine is solid. Many have 150-200k on them. If mine got totalled tomorrow I'd probably buy another or upgrade to a 350.
