I have a 2015, F-250, 6.7 Diesel and want to know what oil most people are using? Manual says CJ-4, 10W-30 regular use, 5W-40 when towing. I asked dealer at last oil change whether I should change to 5W-40 for 12,000 mile trip west. He said 10W-30 should be fine, but I was not sure he said that because they didn't have the 5W-40 on hand. Also, should I use a syn blend or regular heavy duty diesel oil?What are your thoughts?

I use shell rotella t6 in my 6.0 psd. Most reports I have read all almost recommend the synthetics over dino oil. Yes it will be a little more per oil change but you can extend the interval if ya do oil analysis. I go about 5000 mile per oil change but you have the common rail engine so you can go a little further depending on what the manual recommends.

Seems quite of few of the 6.7 folks are running Rotella T6 5w-40 following break in. Easy to find on sale at Walmart. Make sure to use only Motorcraft filters.

Ran Rotella 15W-40 in my old 6.0 for quite some time then switched over to Rotella T6. Been using that ever since. Very happy w/it. Don't have the 6.0 anymore, but T6 is all I've used in the 6.7. Overboard I know, but I change it every 5,000 miles anyways.

I'm at 96k miles running T6 Rotella. I did run 1 oci using 10w30 delo synblend and my truck actually dropped a little in fuel economy so I switched back to T6.

Since you are taking a trip, it will be next to impossible to avoid bio-diesel. 5W-40 or 15W-40 is recommended when using bio-diesel. I use T6 5W-40.

Get your filters online at dieselfilters.com. Based in NJ and cheapest Motorcraft filter prices I've seen. Example: Napa (WIX) fuel filter is roughly 110-115 bucks. DFO price is 52 bucks.

Just put some Mobil Delvac ESP 5-40 in mine about 5,500 miles ago. Will be doing oil analysis here shortly and changing out my filter. Plan on getting, hopefully, 15,000 miles per change. If the analysis comes out right, shouldn't have a problem with that.

not sure why you would use anything but Motor-craft oil? factory oil is what is recommended why would you run tractor oil in your truck I have a 7.3 and never run anything but motor craft oil and filters for a couple of bucks extra it's worth piece of mind in my opinion.

Engine oil specifications

To help achieve acceptable engine performance and durability, it is
important that only engine oils of good quality are used in your diesel engine and it is changed at the recommended interval. For normal or severe service, use Motorcraft oil or an equivalent oil conforming to Ford specifications as listed in the Maintenance product specifications and capacities section in this chapter or API service categories CJ-4 or CJ-4/SM. It is important to use these oils because they are compatible with the emission control equipment of your vehicle to meet the more stringent emission standards.
The use of correct oil viscosities for diesel engines is important for
satisfactory operation. Determine which oil viscosity best suits the
temperature range you expect to encounter for the next service interval from the following SAE viscosity grade chart.

I'm fine with using any oil as long as it meets the specs for my manufacturer. Some just specify a grade and an API rating, which is what I think the case is for Ford. Others have their own special ratings, like CES20081 for my Cummins, ACEA C3 for a VM Motori diesel (Ecodiesel), DEXOS for GM vehicles, and that 500.1 or whatever it is that VW or Audi like to use, etc... I know Ford has some special specs they call out, usually a number code like Ford Spec WSS-ABCD123. If your manual doesn't have that, then whatever oil that has the proper grade and API rating should meet your needs. You can go synthetic if you like on top of that.

I just buy what I can easily get that meets the specs for my motor and has the properties of a synthetic (Higher flash point, more stable viscosity over use, better cold pour behavior).

Who made the Motorcraft oil ? Not Ford as they are not in the oil refining business. Its relabeled from a vendor.

While I do occasionally use Motorcraft oil, it's only because it's on a good sale at Oreilies. Rotella, Delvac, Motorcraft, it doesn't matter as long as the CJ number and weight is correct.
